More about the Holocaust Centre of Toronto
The Holocaust Education and Memorial Centre of Toronto (UJA Federation) is located on the 4th floor of the Lipa Green Building at 4600 Bathurst Street, Toronto. Each year more than 25,000 students from across Ontario visit the facility. Visitors view an audio-visual presentation portraying the experiences of European Jews before, during and after World War II. Each group has the opportunity to meet with a survivor speaker to hear about his/her experiences in the Holocaust. Visitors are also guided through our small museum which houses artifacts from the Holocaust.

The Holocaust Education and Memorial Centre works tirelessly throughout the year to advance Holocaust education. Two of our events are:
  • Holocaust Education Week - The Centre, working with a group of dedicated volunteers, co-ordinates this event in November to commemorate Kristallnacht. During the week lectures, films, cultural programs, and religious services are offered in a variety of venues and sites across the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Yom Hashoah - The Centre organizes this memorial service and encourages other organizations, synagogues, churches and schools to conduct similar services.
In addition to these events the Centre is involved in many activities through its volunteer committees. For example, the Centre presents programs and events of special interest to child survivors/hidden children and members of the "second generation". A Christian outreach committee works with Christian communities on initiatives of mutual interest. An oral history project documented the experiences of Holocaust survivors through audio and video tapes. It's hoped that this documentation will serve as testimonial witness and historical evidence of the Shoah for future generations. We also offer support services to survivors and organize educational events for students and teachers on Holocaust education and related human rights issues.
Holocaust Education and Memorial Centre MandateThe Centre is dedicated to remembering the Holocaust and educating the community about the Holocaust and related human rights issues. We trust that by helping others understand and apply the lessons of the Holocaust we can encourage respect for diversity and prevent acts of discrimination. We work with dedicated volunteers who sit on the following committees:
  • HOLOCAUST EDUCATION WEEK COMMITTEE...
Co-ordinates events that commemorate and educate about the Holocaust. These events take place in the beginning of November to commemorate Kristallnacht.
  • CHILD SURVIVOR/HIDDEN CHILDREN...
serves as a support group for hidden children and child survivors. Special programs and events are planned focusing on issues related to this group.
  • CHRISTIAN OUTREACH...
strengthens relationships to Christian communities through co-operation and work with the Christian Jewish Dialogue of Toronto. Teaching about the Holocaust to clergy and lay Church members is emphasized. An inter-denominational Christian Memorial Service to commemorate the Holocaust is organized annually.
  • HOLOCAUST RESOURCE CENTRE & MEMORIAL MUSEUM...
The Memorial Museum is dedicated to the memory of six million Jews murdered during twelve years of Nazi tyranny. The museum offers visitors an opportunity to share in the memory of the past and resolve to take moral and civic responsibility for the future. The Resource Centre is committed to the advancement of public awareness of the Holocaust and its lessons. In addition, the Centre offers guidance in curriculum development, professional development courses and seminars for teachers, a resource lending library and a survivor speakers bureau.
  • EDUCATION COMMITTEE...
co-operates with the public, private and religious school boards in the Greater Toronto Area in promoting the teaching about the Holocaust and related human rights issues.
  • YOUTH FOR YOUTH...
engages young people in initiatives to promote Holocaust education. The committee oversees an annual writing contest on Holocaust issues that is open to all high school students.
  • SURVIVOR SUPPORT SERVICES...
    Offers support for aging survivors.
